Optimizing prophylaxis of early post operative pyogenic inflammatory complications in patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract

Purpose: To study the clinical efficacy of cytoflavin and extracorporeal immunoprophylaxis with RoncoleukinR in preventing septico-pyogenic complications in coloprotological cancer patients.

Materials and Methods: In a prospective controlled study, we investigated 214 patients, who had been operated for colorectal cancer. Preoperatively we studied the following indicators: T lymphocytes (CD3, CD4, CD8), B lymphocytes (CD72) and IgA, IgM, IgG; cytokine profile: IL-1, IL-4, IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-8, IL-ra; as well as the following systems: peroxide oxidation of lipids (POL) and antioxidant systems: MDA, superoxide dismutase (SOD), GPD and GAA of blood serum. In the group under investigation, in addition to comprehensive intensive therapy we added adoptive immunotherapy using human interleukin 2 together with the antioxidant cytoflavin.

Results: The described method of treatment of colorectal cancer patients allowed us to restore the immune status as well as neutralise the disbalance in the system of free radical oxidation of lipids and restore antioxidant status.

Summary: With the use of RoncoleukinR and citoflavin the number of postoperative complications reduced by 2.1 times leading further to a reduction in mortality by 2.5 times when compared to the group that received the usual treatment.
